lyrics

6) Chickenscratch
Nylon string acoustic guitar solo performed by Victor Switenko.

V1:
When I was a lot younger I used to hate myself
I felt constantly under-foot and ignored and hell
Teachers wondered where I was, absence I was dealt
When under their blundering noses is where I dwelt

During hide-and-seek I'd always win
And emerge the victor with a grin
Recess was over and all the kids went in
Leaving me alone inside the garbage bin

I felt invisible, with none to really talk to
None to share their wisdom, it's impressive I got through
Us and them and the schism was the only thing I knew
Under the grid of the system, my unease grew

I got sad a lot, alone with all my curses
Within dark thoughts in my careless cursive
I wrote myself a plot, death that I thirsted
Figured they'd be better off, myself the one worsted

C:
But I was wrong and I'll never live it down
I remained strong, with every smile comes a frown
Life is long, man, and you may not get it back
You're here and then gone, your story chickenscratch
<x2>

V2:
When I was younger I prayed for cancer
Now I'm older and fear those prayers will get answered
Wishing for somethin' like that isn't worth the chance n'
Life is too long to be spent thinkin' in that manner

It's important not to be a cynic but
That don't make me less of a hypocrite
As a realist I live for that gimmick
But turned internal that shit is sickness

The final frontier is the space between your ears
It's the place where all your fears become all your peers
If you let them, and they'll take some shears to your years
Before they drown you in both your tears and some beers

I thought I was all alone, and the note I wrote said as such
Didn't think I had a home, and my own existence was a crutch
To those I called my own, and that I didn't matter much
And that I was a drone, heart made of stone

C:
But I was wrong and I'll never live it down
I remained strong, with every smile comes a frown
Life is long, man, and you may not get it back
You're here and then gone, your story chickenscratch
<x2>

E:
Be careful what you wish for
You have so much to live for
